Our Story, Our History
Our Origin Story: From a childhood love of nature to a chance meeting in the South African bush, Horizon Hunting Safaris was born out of a shared dream between Elgim Du Preez and American hunter Brooks Raymond Kummer. What started as a successful 10-day hunt has become a lifelong partnership—and now, a thriving hunting destination.
Industry Experience: While the company is newly registered, we bring over 20 years of hands-on experience in the professional hunting industry.
Elgim is one of the most dedicated PH’s I know. He is always prepared to go the extra mile, and he goes above and beyond to ensure a successful hunt. His knowledge of the animals is impressive, and his tracking and hunting skills are phenomenal. His sense of humour and stories make evenings around the campfire a delight. He is definitely the man you want behind you when you pull the trigger on your African safari.

I hunted with Elgim Du Preez in 2023. It was my first trip out of the US and only my second hunting trip ever. Hand-Picked Trophy Combos for Every Type of Hunter
The short answer is that a minimum draw weight of at least 50lbs and a total arrow weight of 400 grains should be sufficient for many African species. We do not recommend using mechanical broadheads for African game, but prefer fixed-blade broadheads. 2/3 bladed fixed broadhead.
We start our hunting season in April and end in October. Early in the season is usually better for spot-and-stalk hunting. Late rains may make an early season hunt a bit more difficult, as can early rains late in the season.
South Africa has, for the most part, a summer rainfall, stretching from October to March. Thus the chances of encountering rain during the hunting season is minimal. South Africa also has a very temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 35°F to 50°F (2°C to 10°C) during the early mornings and evenings and 53°F to 82°F (12°C to 28°C) during the peak of the day, depending on the time of year, with June and July being the coldest months. Colder days might also be expected from time to time. It is thus advisable to bring warm clothing that can be stripped off as the days get warmer.
No vaccinations are required for visiting South Africa, but we recommend you consult with your doctor before your trip. We are situated in a malaria-free area and malaria medication is not needed, unless a safari is scheduled to a specific area where malaria might be a danger, in which case we will advise accordingly. AIDS has reached epidemic proportions in Africa, and although it is not something to worry about, intimate contact with the natives is strongly discouraged.
No. Our hunting season is during the colder winter months when snakes are mostly inactive. Although there are snakes around, you will be lucky to even see one. Spiders and other insects are around, but are quite harmless.

The recent hunting safari in Africa with Elgim was absolutely unforgettable. The experience provided a welcoming and caring environment from the beginning. Elgim showed a great understanding and knowledge of the local wildlife resulting in a rewarding and challenging experience. His commitment to ethical hunting and respect for animals and the environment was apparent throughout the trip. Elgim’s organization and attention to detail, from planning to logistics, made the entire safari easy and stress-free. A personal highlight was the moment Elgim and I walked up to my Sable. An absolutely beautiful animal that we worked so very hard for. This is just one of many, many memories from the hunt with Elgim.
